Harry Butler Institute

Murdoch University’s Harry Butler Institute is a vibrant, collaborative research hub dedicated to creating a more sustainable future. Working closely with industry, government, community and academic partners, the Institute delivers real-world solutions to today’s most pressing environmental challenges through high-impact research and engagement. Our expertise spans terrestrial, aquatic and marine ecology, biosecurity, One Health, and resource and waste management, delivered through four specialist research centres.

Established in 2017 under the leadership of Fulbright scholar Professor Simon McKirdy, a global authority in biosecurity, the Institute is committed to translating research into action. We drive industry best practice, inform policy, and inspire positive change through strong partnerships, academic collaboration, conferences, public lectures and community outreach—ensuring our work makes a lasting impact locally and globally.
